Each summer, SML gratefully welcomes a cohort of talented and passionate seasonal staff members, who make the island function. From captaining and caring for the boats, to fixing and maintaining the building systems, from researching and mentoring, to meal prep, cooking, and cleaning, from ensuring the smooth running of programs and assigning beds, to stocking the lab, and everything else that ensures that Appledore Island is a success. Although our phenomenal instructors are listed on each of their respective course pages, here you will find the rest of the staff members who dedicate their summers to Shoals and the mission of education.

Seabird Technicians
Our Seasonal Seabird Technicians work with SML's Director of Seabird Research, Dr. Elizabeth Craig, to study and manage the breeding colony of Common, Roseate and Arctic terns at White and Seavey Islands. These technicians perform banding and band re-sighting, diet studies, productivity monitoring, and predator management.
Scientists in Residence, SURG Mentors
Our Scientists-in-Residence are provided with space on the island during the summer months, conducting fieldwork or using SML data sets to further their own research. In addition to research, Scientists-in-residence spend a portion of their time mentoring undergraduate researchers participating in our SURG (Shoals Undergraduate Research Group) program.
