We invite all those with a connection to Shoals Marine Lab, past or present, to join us for a very special weekend. We are planning some amazing activities for all participants. Explore the island, enjoy SML educational programming, take advantage of a swim call, participate in a "fire line" to bring supplies on island, play games, enjoy the unique natural environment that only the Isles of Shoals can provide, reconnect with old friends, and meet new ones, and enjoy some good old-fashioned Shoals shenanigans!

Price:
Day trip - $130
1-Night - $300
2-Night - $500
Price is per person, all-inclusive with: overnight shared dormitory accommodations, all meals and beverages, all program activities, and round-trip boat transportation between Portsmouth, NH (or New Castle, NH for the Day Trip option only) and Appledore Island. Space is limited due to our vessel and housing capacities, so reserve your spot soon! This program is open to adults 18 years of age and up and minors aged 12 and up when accompanied by a parent or legal guardian. Children younger than 12 cannot be accommodated.
Participants must bring their own bedding for a twin-sized bed as well as any towels you may need. We suggest a sleeping bag and extra blanket or sheet, as well as a pillow case. Pillows are available. A detailed suggested packing list will be sent to registrants prior to the program but is also available on our Getting to Shoals page.
Appledore Island is a rugged landscape with uneven, slightly steep and rocky paths. Our vessels have limited seating, and Access on/off the island is via steps onto a floating dock, a steep ramp, two sets stairs, and ledge. Participants must be in good physical condition and should be prepared to spend most of the day walking to and from events on the island. Our vessels and island facilities are not accessible due to the nature of being located on an offshore island.
Transportation to the island is via a working research vessel (NOT a typical passenger vessel), which provides insight on how marine research is conducted and therefore does not provide amenities one might find on a typical passenger vessel. Participants must be prepared to stand for 45-90 minutes each way (out to and returning from Appledore Island) and will have limited protection from sun, rain, or spray. Very limited seating is available. Toilet facilities on the vessel are very primitive, for emergencies only, and accessed by using a steep set of stairs. Participants are encouraged to use toilet facilities prior to departure.
Due to the nature of the island, and our protected breeding species, dogs and other pets are not generally allowed on Appledore. We need to work with the UNH Accessibility Services office to ensure suitability of Appledore for any animals prior to visiting. Please contact shoals.lab@unh.edu for more information.
Cancellation Policy:
- At least 30 days before departure = 100% refund
- 29-15 days before departure = 50% refund
- Less than 15 days before departure = 0%
SML boats will run rain or shine, so long as the captain deems it safe to travel. Passengers should come prepared with appropriate clothing in the event of rain or high winds (ocean spray). If the captain deems travel unsafe, boats schedules may be impacted until the weather passes. Communications regarding any weather-related delays will come via email from SML's office.
